Abstract The phenomenon of polymer drag reduction (DR) has primarily been investigated in the context internal flows featuring mixed solutions. However, research on non-uniform DR external flows, such as coatings surfaces marine applications, remains scarce. To address this gap, experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to find out turbulence performance. Firstly, results are shown demonstrate effectiveness DR. Specifically, performance a silicon coating is tested under different Reynolds numbers. Then, mesoscopic dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method coupled with DNS LES methods, finitely extensible nonlinear elastic approach used validate obtained using DNS/LES-DPD method. Additionally, model investigate influence height region behaviour also investigated. reveals that efficiency significant even when does not extend across entire fluid area application coating.
